About

Hello, I'm Karen Selick, the owner of KeenEyesEditing.ca and Custom Legal English Consultant.

Karen SelickKaren Selick

In 1976, I got my LL.B. degree (Bachelor of Laws) from the University of Toronto. I was called to the bar in Ontario, Canada in 1978 and worked as a lawyer for almost four decades before retiring. I was an in-house corporate lawyer for several years, and a private practice lawyer in a small law firm for 24 years. I've done both litigation and solicitor's work.

In 2016, I retired from my law practice and studied  holistic nutrition and biology for a few years. Then I got my TEFL certificate and began teaching English online in 2020.

Meanwhile, I have been a freelance writer for more than thirty years. I've written hundreds of articles for Canadian newspapers and magazines, including the National Post, The Globe and Mail, and Reader's Digest Canada. I was a columnist for sixteen years at Canadian Lawyer magazine and won a couple of awards for my columns there.

These days, I assist companies and individuals in improving and perfecting their written English legal documents, websites, and spoken presentations. I love clear communications, and I love the process of selecting the best words to express each thought. I also enjoy working with a wide variety of clients.

I'm an experienced public speaker and have also been in the position of doing the hiring for a law firm. I can provide coaching for English-language job interviews as well as for conference presentations or meetings.

I work from my home in rural eastern Ontario, Canada. In addition to English, I speak French at a B2 level and Spanish at A2. I've recently studied beginner Mandarin too, to understand the structure of the language.

I'd be happy to meet with you online to discuss how I can help you with your English-language business requirements.
